I think Gulestan and his family deserved much more than I was able to show in the City Paper.

His passing, while not surprising, was abrupt and occurred as the story was really unfolding.

The piece in the City Paper was extremely edited, and an entirely different piece that what I originally submitted. It was, in the end, an informal obit.

There was a tremendous amount of depth in the family and, honestly, some things about them that deeply concerned and frightened me. I attempted to explain these issues in the original draft, but there was not much interest.

In the end, the piece merely chronicled his kind and humble daily life. He was a wonderful man who cared deeply for those around him.

I’m glad that you mentioned that the photos said more than the text. I am primarily a photojournalist but thought some brief words were in order when he passed. I hoped to tell the story in photos.
