\nFrost quakes, rare phenomena that simulate earthquakes, rattled hundreds of residents Thursday in Darke and Miami counties in Ohio and Randolph County in Indiana, emergency management officials said.

No, they do not simulate earthquakes at all,
\nnot the kind that rocked Japan to its core,
\nsplit wide the ocean floor and shot, fast
\nas a jet, its deep waters to the closest
\nand farthest shores, drowning mothers and fathers,
\nchildren, cousins, and friends. Noisy yes,
\nthe explosions rose from beneath the layers
\nof ice and snow, as liquid seeped below,
\nthen froze, expanded, stressing rocks
\ntill something had to pop. Sure, residents
\nwere scared. But not to death.
\nJust one moment of fright,
\nharmless as a horror movie, Godzilla
\nunreal, even melodramatic, his long tail
\nswinging into buildings, his roar
\nreminiscent of a good hard laugh.
\nSo what if some siding wriggled
\nloose or a shingle fell from the roof,
\nif some man ran buck naked out his front
\ndoor to see what the hell had shaken his house?
\nHe returned to his tub, warmed himself
\nin the shower, and when he finished,
\nhe did what all of us want to do
\nand turned the water off.<\/p>\n

\nYou want to peer into all of them.<\/p>\n

Perhaps, they carry the elements
\nof your desired blessing,<\/p>\n

fabric of your breath.
\nAnd of course you think of Keats<\/p>\n

and how one day old age<\/em>
\nshall this generation waste<\/em>,<\/p>\n

and you picture the urn, ashes
\nof your grandmother within, settling.<\/p>\n

You remember, too, the way you stood
\nat her grave, summoning the spirit<\/p>\n

of your childhood to stand witness
\nto your grief, invoke the image<\/p>\n

of her candy tin bejeweled
\nwith rainbow hues,<\/p>\n

M & Ms mounding inside.
\nYou wish every vessel would fill<\/p>\n

with such sweet potential, supply
\nbliss that cannot be contained.<\/p>\n

For you know a time always comes
\nwhen you\u2019ll stare at a stone<\/p>\n

engraved with a name you once spoke
\nin the course of casual conversation,<\/p>\n

name then heavy on your tongue,
\nsince each clay body empties<\/p>\n
