The Idiot Anthem<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a time of great fanfare, unfair<\/p>\n

to many, loud and full of old wind.<\/p>\n

We stepped out onto the balcony<\/p>\n

as the motorcade went by.<\/p>\n

In the crowd we saw a premonition of<\/p>\n

our own funerals, each<\/p>\n

of us distinctly, individual nightmares.<\/p>\n

Those who stayed inside<\/p>\n

were dying inside, their words as lax<\/p>\n

as exhalations. We breathed in<\/p>\n

the ichor of the age, and, in so doing,<\/p>\n

were lumped together,<\/p>\n

lock-stepped, versed in our own dis-<\/p>\n

solution, riding the coaster<\/p>\n

just for the drops and loops, invested<\/p>\n

in our own demise, our souls drying,<\/p>\n

singing until the end, the idiot anthem.<\/p>\n

Alone as I Wanna Be<\/strong><\/p>\n

The candle I placed on the<\/p>\n

windowsill only throws<\/p>\n

light inward. The opening<\/p>\n

is made of mourning.<\/p>\n

Day turns to night & back to<\/p>\n

day but the black dog always<\/p>\n

returns. I pet him because<\/p>\n

we have a deal. He scares<\/p>\n

me to death & I feed him<\/p>\n

from the dishware of my bones.<\/p>\n

The New Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lost day at 59<\/p>\n

is not the<\/p>\n

same as a lost day<\/p>\n

earlier. Every<\/p>\n

blank space<\/p>\n

cries out to be<\/p>\n

filled, every book<\/p>\n

read, every<\/p>\n

movie seen. I<\/p>\n

step out onto<\/p>\n

the pier and the<\/p>\n

water seems<\/p>\n

so like a path I<\/p>\n

am tempted<\/p>\n

to go further. In-<\/p>\n

stead the moon-<\/p>\n

light says through<\/p>\n

the mouth of<\/p>\n

a trout: You are<\/em><\/p>\n

golden. There<\/em><\/p>\n

are mysteries still <\/em><\/p>\n

to be recorded.<\/em><\/p>\n

There are things<\/em><\/p>\n

only you know. <\/em><\/p>\n

So I forgive<\/p>\n

myself and, on the<\/p>\n

way home, pick<\/p>\n

up an ax and an<\/p>\n

adze. It\u2019s getting<\/p>\n

serious, this project.<\/p>\n
