Although there is no actual
mini-golf course in Jersey City, this drawing effectively creates
a metaphor out of the strategy and pseudo-sportsmanship involved in
carving a business district out of what used to be a neighborhood
with honest-to-goodness neighbors. For decades, Jersey City has been
plagued by greedy law-makers and real estate developers, causing a
mounting tension between native residents, newcomers, and business
owners. The Dixon pencil manufacturer signs allude to the old factory
buildings dotting the city that have been renovated into luxury housing,
thereby making them unavailable to the large number of residents in
need of low-income housing.
