Having had a very similar childhood in Alaska (including in Candle, about 200 miles north of Nome), I was moved by your portrayal of the vast bleakness of the Arctic and what it does to people trapped in its icy grip.
What is most interesting is that we both went to Stanford (I graduated in 1957). How did they decide to give both of us a way out into the world?
Your description of dealing with your sister’s dementia brings back memories of my mother’s long descent into the relentless maw of Alzheimer’s.
