An older Scottish woman, a nurse and counsellor, told me that breast cancer was caused metaphorically by loved ones sucking the nurturing out of a woman. I have continuously found this to be a fairly valid metaphore. As the the husband, the applicable metaphore would be the bad weed gets the light. But I have seen signed that bad weeds do eventually run into problems with their adopted survival stratefies and they can be rather large problems. But best to pull the weeds while they are small.
