Q: Why did you decide to create a fragrance?<\/p>\n
A: At my monastery in Tibet, we have no running water, so monks and nuns go months without bathing. One spritz of Harmony, the stench is gone. Well, maybe two spritzes.<\/p>\n
Q: Please describe the scent.<\/p>\n
A: I like to say it\u2019s a whiff of the Aegean, a breeze of the Alps. Basically it\u2019s a blend of violet, white rose, vanilla, red curry, black currant, liver sausage, musk, tusk, and turmeric. It\u2019s spiritual yet seductive.<\/p>\n
Q: It\u2019s for both men and women, is that correct?<\/p>\n
A: It is for men, women, and camels.<\/p>\n
Q: How long did it take to come up with the name Harmony?<\/p>\n
A: Four and a half centuries.<\/p>\n
Q: Was there a second choice?<\/p>\n
A: White Robes.<\/p>\n
Q: How many white robes do you own, your Holiness?<\/p>\n
A: Two thousand and one.<\/p>\n
Q: Who makes them for you?<\/p>\n
A: Most are made by a nimble-fingered nun in the monastery. She works wonders with fabric and the afflicted. The remainders are shipped to me from Lane Bryant.<\/p>\n
Q: Your Holiness, what\u2019s your advice for those who strive to be at peace with themselves?<\/p>\n
A: Meditate daily. Eat raw food from the earth. Never park in a space labeled \u2018compact\u2019 if you drive a Buick or bigger.<\/p>\n
Q: Do you eat only raw food?<\/p>\n
A: Yes, but once a week I treat myself to roast beef on rye at a new deli in New Delhi.<\/p>\n
Q: Do you have any pet peeves?<\/p>\n
A: Just one.<\/p>\n

A: Being mistaken for Ben Kingsley.<\/p>\n
Q: I understand you always fly economy class. Why is that?<\/p>\n
A: I like being among real people. The young and the old, the kind and the irritating. Besides, money\u2019s tight in Tibet.<\/p>\n
Q: Do you support gay marriage?<\/p>\n
A: Oh yes. I believe it is a true gift when any two people love each other. With the possible exception of Jon and Kate Gosselin.<\/p>\n
Q: As the Dalai Lama, what\u2019s one thing you\u2019re unable to do that most men can do easily?<\/p>\n
A: Play Billy Flynn in Chicago.<\/p>\n
Q: If you weren\u2019t the Dalai Lama, what would you be?<\/p>\n
A: Probably a personal shopper. I need to be of service to my fellow man.<\/p>\n
Q: I understand you\u2019re of service to Liza Minnelli. Is it true that you\u2019re her AA sponsor?<\/p>\n
A: I am, and it\u2019s a full-time job.<\/p>\n
Q: Isn\u2019t Richard Gere a good friend?<\/p>\n
A: He was, until he started dropping my name at trendy restaurants.<\/p>\n
Q: If you could change one thing in the world – besides doing away with war and poverty – what would it be?<\/p>\n
A: I would stamp out obesity in the lesbian community.<\/p>\n
Q: Back to your new fragrance. I\u2019ve heard you plan to donate fifty percent of Harmony\u2019s profits to charitable causes.<\/p>\n
A: Forty.<\/p>\n
Q: Oh. Forty percent. Can you tell us which charities?<\/p>\n
A: International Campaign for Tibet, United Nations Children\u2019s Fund, and Coalition to Help the Reincarnated to Remember.<\/p>\n
Q: Other than promoting Harmony, what do you intend to do while in New York City?<\/p>\n
A: Well, I\u2019m promoting Harmony but I\u2019m also promoting harmony.<\/p>\n
Q: Of course you are. But what\u2019s on your calendar for tonight and tomorrow?<\/p>\n
A: Would you believe I haven\u2019t seen Wicked? So it\u2019s Wicked at eight, and then Paula Poundstone\u2019s midnight show at Caroline\u2019s. Tomorrow I do brunch with Hilary Duff. After that, I meet with the Zagat people.<\/p>\n
Q: For what purpose?<\/p>\n
A: Tim and Nina are composing a new directory called 100 Clean Toilets in Tibet. So far they\u2019ve found two. When I\u2019m done with them, I grab a cab to LaGuardia and fly Jet Blue to Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n
