We’re excited to include music in this edition, with singer-songwriter & author, Roberta Lawrence (accompanied by guitarist Bob Montero), and poet & author, Madeleine Beckman (who also happens to be a former ballet dancer). Roberta will perform original music while Madeleine will read from her poetry–and both will share how their work came to be and how writing, music, and creativity come together to make art and song.

Madeleine Beckman is a poet, fiction, and nonfiction writer. She is the recipient of awards and grants from, among other places, Poetry Society of America, New York Foundation for the Arts, Irish Arts Council (IE), Fundación Valparaíso (Spain); and Zvona i Nari (Croatia). Her poetry collections include Hyacinths from the Wreckage (Serving House Books), No Roadmap, No Brakes (Redbird Chapbooks), and Dead Boyfriends (Linear Arts Books). Her work has been published in journals, anthologies, and online. Madeleine is Contributing Reviewer for the Bellevue Literary Review and Contributing Editor for Agora: Literature and Arts Journal (NYU School of Medicine). She teaches Narrative & Reflective Writing at NYU School of Medicine, Division of Medical Humanities; she also teaches privately. You can find her at http://madeleinebeckman.com.

Roberta Lawrence is a singer/songwriter whose songs one day spontaneously expanded into short stories and novels. She is working on a novel, Quietly Crazy for You, which is inspired by years spent in the alternate universe of jazz and studio musicians in the late 1970s and 1980s. Roberta has received a New Voices Award from the Writer’s Voice, a Ludwig Vogelstein Fiction grant, and multiple artist residencies at Ragdale and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her articles and reviews have appeared in BOMBMusicianASCAP in ActionBackstage, and other publications. She helms her own public relations firms, Roberta Lawrence Media and Soundcheck PR, and is a singer/songwriter, lyricist, and record producer. The CD that she produced featuring her late husband, trumpeter/composer Mike Lawrence, Nightwind, topped the Billboard charts and is due to be re-released later this year.

About the Author

Trumpet Fiction is a free, monthly literary reading series in Manhattan that runs from October through June. You can find us on the second Saturday of every month at KGB Bar (85 E 4th Street). The series was founded in 1999 by Jonathan Kravetz, who is also founder and former Editor-in-Chief of Ducts. No RSVPs necessary to attend—the series is free and open to the public.

Twice a year, we feature readers from Ducts magazine, while the remaining readings feature various authors and genres. Stay tuned to the Events page for information on upcoming readings and to see pictures from our past installments.
